Laptop upgrades: RAM and SSD

Make an older laptop fast again, when an upgrade will actually help.

For most older laptops, the biggest single upgrade is replacing the hard drive with an SSD: starting up, opening programs and everything else gets dramatically faster. More RAM helps if you keep many tabs or programs open and the laptop runs out of memory.

Not every laptop can be upgraded: on many thin laptops the RAM is soldered to the board. And not every slow laptop needs an upgrade. We check what's slowing yours down first, and tell you if an upgrade won't make a difference you'd feel.

Signs an upgrade will help

  • It takes minutes to start up
  • It slows to a crawl with a few browser tabs open
  • You're running out of storage space
  • It still has a spinning hard drive

What we do

  • Check what your laptop supports: RAM slots and maximum, SATA or NVMe SSD
  • Copy your system and files to the new SSD, so everything is where you left it
  • Fit and test the upgrade
  • Replace the Wi-Fi card if yours is slow or failing

What affects the price

  • SSD size and type, SATA or NVMe
  • RAM type and amount, and how many slots are free
  • Whether you want your old system copied over or a fresh install

Questions people ask

Will more RAM make my laptop faster?
Only if it's running out of memory. If your laptop is slow because of a hard drive, heat or software, more RAM won't fix it, and we'll tell you so.
Can I keep my files and programs when I upgrade to an SSD?
Yes. We copy the whole drive across, so Windows, your programs and your files stay as they were.
Is it worth upgrading an old laptop?
Often, if it's a few years old and still has a hard drive. For very old machines the money is sometimes better put towards a newer laptop. We'll show you both options.
