Laptop hinge repair

A lid that flops back, creaks, or has started to split the case around the hinge.

Hinges loosen and break with use, and on many laptops they're screwed into small plastic mounts that crack long before the metal hinge fails. Caught early, it's often a simple repair. Left alone, every opening of the lid pulls the case apart further and can tear the display cable that runs through the hinge.

If the lid feels stiff or you hear cracking when you open it, stop forcing it and have it looked at.

Signs it's the hinge

  • The lid won't stay up, or falls all the way back
  • A cracking sound or resistance when you open it
  • The bezel or the bottom of the case is splitting near the hinge
  • The screen flickers or goes black when you move the lid, a sign the display cable is being pulled

What we do

  • Check the hinges, their mounts and the display cable
  • Rebuild cracked mounts where the repair will last, or replace the damaged case part
  • Replace the hinges
  • Check the screen works at every angle afterwards

What affects the price

  • The hinges alone, or the mounts and case too
  • Whether the case part is available for your model
  • Whether the display cable was damaged

Questions people ask

Can I keep using a laptop with a broken hinge?
Carefully, and not for long. Each time you open it, the broken side twists the lid and pulls on the display cable. Until it's fixed, open the lid from the middle, not from a corner.
Is hinge repair worth it?
Usually, if it's caught before the case or the screen is damaged. If the case is badly broken and the part isn't available for your model, we'll tell you before you spend anything.

Send the model and what's wrong. You'll get a price range straight away and a fixed price once we've seen it.
