Laptop not charging: charging port repair

Not charging, charging only when the cable is held at an angle, or a port that wobbles.

A laptop that won't charge usually comes down to one of four things: the charger, the charging port, the battery, or the charging circuit on the board. They look the same from the outside and cost very different amounts to fix, so we test each one before quoting.

Older laptops tend to have a round barrel connector, often on a short cable that is cheap to replace. Newer ones charge over USB-C, where the port is soldered to the board and the job is more delicate.

Signs it's the port

  • "Plugged in, not charging"
  • It charges only when the plug is held at a certain angle
  • The plug is loose, or the port moves
  • The charging light flickers or stays off
  • Burn marks or a burnt smell around the port
  • It charges with one charger but not another

What we do

  • Test your charger's output
  • Check the port, its cable and its solder joints
  • Check the battery and the charging circuit
  • Replace the port or its cable. Faults in the charging circuit itself go to our board specialist, and you're told before they do

What affects the price

  • A barrel jack on a cable, or a port soldered to the board
  • USB-C ports, which need careful board work
  • Whether the charging circuit on the board is damaged too

Questions people ask

Why is my laptop plugged in but not charging?
Most often a worn charger or a loose port, sometimes the battery or the charging chip on the board. A quick test tells which, and it's worth doing before you buy a new charger or battery.
Is it safe to keep using it?
Not if the port is loose or you can see burn marks. Sparking at a loose connector can damage the board and turn a small repair into a big one.
