Laptop keyboard replacement
Dead keys, keys that type on their own, or a keyboard that met a cup of coffee.
Most laptop keyboards can't be fixed one key at a time: the keys share a single layer underneath, so when keys stop registering, the keyboard is replaced. A missing keycap or a broken clip is different, and often a quick fix.
On many laptops the keyboard is riveted into the top of the case, which makes the job bigger. We tell you which kind your model has before we quote.
Signs it's the keyboard
- Some keys don't respond, or need a hard press
- Keys type twice, or type characters you didn't press
- The keyboard stopped working after a spill
- Keycaps missing or broken
- The backlight is out on part or all of the keyboard
What we do
- Rule out software and driver faults first, with an external keyboard
- After a spill, check the board underneath for liquid, not just the keyboard
- Fit the right keyboard for your model, in English, Arabic or both
- Test every key before you get the laptop back
What affects the price
- Whether the keyboard is screwed in or riveted to the case
- The layout and backlight you want, and what's available for your model
- Whether liquid reached the board underneath
Questions people ask
- Can you fix just one key?
- If the keycap or its clip is broken, often yes. If the key itself doesn't register, the fault is in the layer underneath and the keyboard needs replacing.
- I spilled something on my laptop keyboard. What should I do?
- Turn it off and unplug it straight away, don't switch it back on to check, and bring it in. Liquid often gets past the keyboard to the board, where the damage keeps getting worse while there's power.
- Can I get an Arabic keyboard?
- For most models, yes: English, Arabic, or both on the same keys. Tell us the model and we'll confirm what we can get for it.
Send the model and what's wrong. You'll get a price range straight away and a fixed price once we've seen it.
